Fallen Angel, known as Two Worlds Collide in the NDD, is the first demo I made by myself during my time at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment. Taking place with a sci-fi pilot crashing on a fantasy planet, this is a game I was supposed to make for one of my projects in order to make a game where the player can interact with the environment and showcase a working AI system.
I managed to create a working text-based talking system in the game for the player to be able to interact with by pressing E. It was simple and easy enough to code but came up with difficulties since the module didn't let the texts go in order, which I had to fix up by placing them in the right spot for the code to detect what is supposed to be played first. This is where I focussed much of my attention first since the narrative was supposed to be one of the focuses of the game. This is also included in the NDD located at the bottom.
There is also the AI, which was pretty hard to code for someone new to programming. I had managed the AI to move around, couldn't get the proper animations to work, and follow the player when it detects the player when in range of its view. This made me learn the difficulties of trying to get an AI working since it requires excellent coding for the AI to do the slightest of movements.
The best thing I have achieved in the project is building the level using the Cube Grid builder tool, which is a new tool in Unreal Engine 5. It allowed me to create perfect shapes by drawing upon a grid and using my mouse and then bringing it out to create a structure within the game, helping me to be able to. This helped me to create a much more detailed map than the one I previously envisioned (bottom pictures on the right) and helped show me how UE5 is a much easier engine to use for the subject.
